What Is a Business Technology Assessment?

A business technology assessment measures how well your systems support the way your business actually works. Where an audit asks what you pay for, an assessment asks whether your setup is helping you sell, serve and scale.

Both are useful. They simply answer different questions, and knowing which one you need saves time.

Audit versus assessment

A software audit answers: what am I spending?

It inventories subscriptions, exposes duplication and produces a cancellation shortlist. The outcome is usually money saved.

An assessment answers: is this setup fit for purpose?

It scores areas such as website health, customer journey, automation, digital risk and reporting. The outcome is usually capability gained.

What gets measured

  • Systems coverage: whether every core business function has an owner tool.
  • Connection: how much information moves between tools without a human copying it.
  • Risk: backups, access control, single points of failure and password practice.
  • Customer experience: how smooth the path is from first contact to paid.
  • Reporting: whether you can answer basic performance questions quickly.

How scoring works

Each area is scored out of 100 so you can see where attention is worth most. Under 50 signals something is actively costing you money or time. Between 50 and 74 the foundations hold but there are clear gaps. Above 75 the work shifts from fixing to refining.

Scores matter most when repeated. Re-running the same assessment in six months turns opinion into measurable progress.

Choosing the right starting point

If your main concern is cost, start with the Free Tech Stack Audit. If your concern is that the business feels harder to run than it should, a focused assessment such as business systems, website health or digital risk will give you more.
